A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machine that is quite similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some items, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These machinery are mainly utilized in a warehouse setting. Usually they are used for moving pallets and doing specific jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which normally sits quite near the ground. The operator can direct the machine to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be raised to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. For example, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then whole platform could be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, several businesses may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker could also put pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts could be used to complete these specific tasks at several companies instead.
