Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures should be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is important to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the post should not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Do not permit things like for instance lighters or matches to be utilized while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place well ventilated. The recharging process could release fumes. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
